Project 23. Financial services

Crypto inside superannuation, a regulated proof of concept

For a financial adviser, the proof of concept and prototype of a mobile app to invest part of Australians' superannuation in crypto. The design was done, the client paid in full, and the regulators decided the rest.

What it changed

  • A proof of concept and a mobile-app prototype, refined over many design iterations.
  • A product designed around a regulated industry's constraints from the first screen.
  • Paid in full: a good client and a good collaboration.

The situation

A financial adviser had an idea ahead of its time: let Australians invest part of their superannuation, around 10%, in crypto, through a mobile app. Superannuation is one of the most regulated corners of Australian finance, so the product had to convince two audiences: the members who would use it, and the funds and regulators who would have to allow it.

What we did

The proof of concept and the MVP design: we defined the product, then designed the mobile app's screens in Sketch and linked them into a clickable InVision prototype. We went through many iterations with the client, refining each journey until it was clear and credible.

How it ended

The app was never built. The client couldn't get approval to have a super fund allocate members' savings to crypto, and without it there was no product to launch. He paid everything he owed us, and the collaboration was excellent from start to finish.

What it taught me

In a regulated industry, the regulator is part of the product. The right order is to settle what's allowed first, then design. And the experience of a client who pays on time, after the clients who didn't, showed us what a healthy engagement looks like.

Why it matters to you

Finance, health, government: if your product needs someone's approval, we'll design for that approval from the first screen, and help you find out early whether you'll get it.
