DataForSEO is how I do SEO now. You create an account, top up, and pay for the calls you make: keyword research, rankings, competitors, backlinks, a crawl of a site for an audit. It costs pennies. It doesn't fully replace Ahrefs or Semrush, but for audits and research it covers what I used them for, without their subscriptions, which are extremely expensive and charged whether you use them that month or not.
It's also made for agentic work. It's an API with an MCP server, so the agent does the research: Claude Code pulls the keywords, crawls the site, checks the backlinks and writes the audit. There's no dashboard to learn, because the agent is the dashboard.
I drive it with my own skill, seo-pilot, on HappySkills (both mine). It runs a whole SEO engagement in phases, from connecting the data to the audit, the fixes and the monitoring, and it keeps a log per domain so the work picks up where it left off weeks later. Every data call goes through DataForSEO.
To set it up, install HappySkills first, by giving this prompt to Claude Code or Codex:
Go to install.happyskills.ai and install it for me.
Then install seo-pilot:
Use happyskills to install nicolasdao/seo-pilot in my project
Once it's installed, it explains how to get your DataForSEO credentials and set them up.
Use it when
- Site audits and keyword research without a monthly subscription: you pay for the calls you make, and a quiet month costs nothing.
- SEO work driven by an agent: an API, an official MCP server and skills like my seo-pilot, so Claude Code runs the research and writes the report.
- One-off audits for a client or a new site: a few dollars of calls instead of a month of a suite you'll cancel.
- Rankings, competitors, backlinks, AI-search mentions and on-page checks from one account and one balance.
Don't use it when
- A non-technical marketing team that wants to live in a dashboard: DataForSEO is data, not an app. That's where an SEO suite earns its price.
- Your own site's real clicks and impressions: that's Google Search Console, free. DataForSEO's volumes and traffic are estimates.
Pricing
Pay as you go, no subscription: top up at least $50, and the balance never expires. From $0.0006 per search results page, $0.0012 per keyword task, $0.00015 per audited page; backlinks $0.024 per request plus $0.000036 per row. $1 of free credit to try it.
Gotchas, with fixes
Gotcha: It doesn't use an API key: it signs in with the API login and password from the API Access dashboard.
Fix: Keep them in a gitignored .env or your secrets manager, never in the chat. seo-pilot sets them up this way.
Gotcha: Pay as you go also means an agent in a loop can spend the balance.
Fix: Set a daily spending limit for the account, or per API, in the dashboard, and top up by hand rather than automatically.
Gotcha: The same request costs more in Live mode than in the Standard queue, which is cheaper but slower.
Fix: Use the Standard queue for batch audits and keyword lists; keep Live for answers you need now.
Gotcha: The MCP server exposes dozens of tools, and some clients cap them (Cursor allows 40 active).
Fix: Enable only the modules you need, or call the API through a skill: seo-pilot uses its dataforseo-web-api skill instead of the MCP server.
Instead, consider
- Ahrefs, Semrush and other SEO subscription suites A marketing team that works in the dashboards every day and wants the reports built for them.
- HappySkills Installs seo-pilot, the skill that drives an SEO engagement through DataForSEO.
- Claude Code The agent that runs the calls and writes the audit.
- Serper An agent's quick web searches while it works: the first page of Google in a second or two, for less.
